MORNING FANTASY REPORT
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 — WEEK 2

TONIGHT’S GAME
Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills
Kickoff: 8:15 PM ET

KEY POINT: It’s the first Thursday game of Week 2. Set contingency plans for injured players, review waiver claims, and do not lock in close flex decisions too early.

TOP HEADLINES

  • Sam Darnold is OUT for Seattle this week. Drew Lock is expected to start.

  • Seattle downgrade: Darnold being out lowers the short-term floor for the Seahawks passing offense. Cooper Kupp was limited Wednesday with a back issue, while Tory Horton practiced in full after a hamstring issue.

  • Jordan Mason has been placed on IR after thumb surgery and is expected to miss at least four weeks.

  • A.J. Brown has been placed on IR with a high-ankle injury and is expected to miss at least four weeks.

  • Caleb Douglas, Dolphins WR, is being identified as one of the top waiver-wire additions after emerging as Miami’s WR1.

INJURY WATCH

HIGHER-URGENCY PLAYERS

Kyler Murray, QB — Concussion
Status: Limited
Action: Have a quarterback backup ready.

Sam Darnold, QB — Hip/Glute
Status: OUT
Action: Downgrade Seattle receivers and avoid relying on the Seahawks passing game if possible.

Jordan Mason, RB — Thumb
Status: IR, minimum four weeks
Action: Move to IR if eligible. Add Minnesota’s next available backfield option.

Alvin Kamara, RB — Knee
Status: Full participant
Action: More encouraging than a DNP, but continue monitoring.

Nico Collins, WR — Hamstring
Status: Limited
Action: Do not commit to starting him until later practice reports are available.

A.J. Brown, WR — High ankle
Status: IR, minimum four weeks
Action: Move to IR. Monitor other Patriots receivers and pass-catching backs for added opportunity.

Zay Flowers, WR — Hamstring
Status: Did not practice
Action: Have a flex replacement ready.

Ladd McConkey, WR — Rib
Status: Monitor
Action: Check practice participation and game status before locking your lineup.

Brock Bowers, TE — Knee
Status: Monitor
Action: Keep a usable tight end replacement available.

Juwan Johnson, TE — Illness
Status: Did not practice
Action: Monitor his return to practice before starting.

WAIVER WIRE PRIORITIES

  1. Caleb Douglas, WR, Dolphins
Potential top waiver add after reportedly becoming Miami’s WR1. Worth an aggressive claim in most 12-team formats.

  2. Minnesota RB depth
Jordan Mason’s IR placement creates an opening. Identify and add the Vikings’ next-back-up or passing-down option if your league’s waiver wire is thin.

  3. Tory Horton, WR, Seahawks
Deep-league bench add only. He practiced fully, but Seattle’s quarterback change lowers the short-term ceiling.

  4. Patriots WR/RB opportunities
With A.J. Brown out for at least four games, track routes, target share, and snaps for the remaining Patriots receivers and receiving backs before making a large FAAB bid.

THURSDAY NIGHT START/SIT PLAN

Lions and Bills studs: Start them normally.

Close flex decision: Favor the player with the healthier profile, clearer role, and later-game flexibility if the matchup is close.

Fringe Lions or Bills starters: Wait for inactives before committing.

Bills RB Ty Johnson: Questionable with a hamstring injury. Do not treat him as a reliable standalone option unless late news indicates a larger role.

Detroit offensive line: OT Blake Miller and G Christian Mahogany are out. This slightly adds risk to Detroit’s protection and rushing efficiency.

TODAY’S TO-DO LIST

Move Jordan Mason and A.J. Brown to IR, if eligible.

Review waiver claims for Caleb Douglas and Minnesota RB depth.

Set backup plans for Kyler Murray, Nico Collins, Zay Flowers, Ladd McConkey, Brock Bowers, and Juwan Johnson.

Check Lions-Bills inactive lists around 6:45 PM ET.

Avoid panic trades based on one week of results.

Prioritize players with increasing snap share, route participation, red-zone work, and stable quarterback play.

WEEK 2 EDGE

The biggest advantage this week is reacting to role changes without overreacting to a single box score. Use injuries and playing-time shifts to make proactive bench and waiver moves, but wait for final practice statuses before changing your core starters.
